Nov 17, 2010 · Accidental grounding with bilge keels can become a real snafu.I saw a boat lost on a Mexican beach cuz the bilge keels anchored it ! Last winter I watched a deep (single) keel boat get smashed to pieces in the surf zone off Waikiki when the keel got hung up on the bottom, something that likely would not have happened with shallower twin keels.

Nov 28, 2005 · Remember, though, that the Herreshoff's boats were built lightly in general and had rather flat runs where the bilge stringer would lay. Different hulls might benefit from stringers more than theirs. Also, the bilge stringer, as much of a pain as stringers are to install, is a very useful attachment piece for cabin furniture.

As soon as it happens below the waterline and the automatic bilge pump runs one last time before the battery dies alltogether, it's the perfect siphon and down she goes.

A couple years after she was built, with naïve enthusiasm, I decided to paint the bilge just because since it's wood it ought to be painted regularly.
