Big Muddy - A refuge with units highlighting habitats along the lower Missouri river. Refuge staff work to restore natural floodplain conditions, including bottomland forests and its associated wetlands for the benefit of wildlife. We strive to provide public access to all areas for wildlife dependent recreation including hunting and fishing.

The Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge was established in 1994, and has grown to over 16,700 acres (68 km 2). Like pearls on a string, these acres are spread out as individual units along the Missouri River between Kansas City and St. Louis. These pearls of habitat benefit floodplain-dependent fish and wildlife species.

The refuge contains three naturally formed and functioning chutes - Cranberry Bend, Lisbon Bottom and Boone’s Crossing, as well as the remnants of several historic chutes - Jackass Bend, St. Aubert’s Island and Cora Island.
