Jan 10, 2017 · The epiphysis of the proximal phalanx of the first toe may have a central split (bifid epiphysis), due to incomplete ossification (Fig. 15.20). The bifid epiphysis may also appear sclerotic. Occasionally, the proximal epiphyses of other toes may be affected.

The surgical treatment of bifid great toes has not generated as much interest as that of its upper extremity counterpart. Early treatment of this foot deformity is necessary for ease of shoe wear and cosmesis.
