Ballinamore is in the south-east of County Leitrim in the North Midlands of Ireland, the town being 19 km (12 mi) from the county boundary with County Fermanagh. The town is built on the Yellow River.

Ballinamore is situated on the Shannon-Erne waterway and is a welcoming town to passing cruisers and water users. It is a thriving rural centre to the local parishes and is internationally renowned for its abundance of coarse angling waters.
