Bald Head Island Conservancy's Sea Turtle Protection Program is dedicated to conserving and protecting the loggerhead turtles that nest on the island's beaches during nesting season. Our conservation program aims to safeguard the turtle hatchlings and their nesting habitat.

Oct 10, 2024 · The Bald Head Island Conservancy staff and its team of volunteers are dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles and their nesting habitats. We work with numerous state and regional partners to protect these threatened and endangered species, conduct sea turtle ecology research, and engage the public about the importance of marine life.

Every year, Turtle Season is May 1 through November 15. This is the time when loggerhead sea turtles visit Bald Head Island beaches (and if we’re lucky, perhaps a Ridley’s kemp or leatherback sea turtle).

Seeing a nesting sea turtle or watching a nest boil and release a hundred turtle hatchlings are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, so be sure to become a member of the Conservancy and participate in a Turtle Walk during your stay on Bald Head Island.

As we begin the 2024 nesting season, the Bald Head Island Conservancy would like to remind everyone to be mindful of the beach and its natural inhabitants during these months. Please remember:

Bald Head Island is a Sea Turtle Sanctuary. DO NOT DISTURB SEA TURTLE NESTS. Sea turtle nests are marked with wooden posts, tape, signage, and cages, and should be avoided.

From their Barrier Island Study Center, located on the island’s eastern end, the BHI Conservancy monitors and protects the loggerhead turtles that nest on the island’s beaches.

We all love our turtles here on Bald Head Island, but how much do we know about them? What do sea turtles eat? Where do they go after they hatch? What is their shell called? In this program you can learn more about our beloved sea turtles that are out in the ocean.

Bald Head Island plays host to a very famous inhabitant - the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. During early summer each year - around May and June - female loggerheads crawl upon Bald Head Island's shores to lay eggs and then bury them in the sand.

Oct 16, 2024 · As a saturation tagging beach, the Conservancy’s team intercepts and attempts to identify every one of Bald Head’s sea turtles in real time —an accurate and time-saving approach that the NC Wildlife Resources Commission sanctions through permits.
