Ba Gua Zhang, along with Xing Yi Quan, and Tai Ji Quan, is one of the Chinese Internal Martial Arts, or Nei Jia Quan (Internal Boxing Arts). Translated literally, Ba Gua Zhang means “Eight Diagram Palm,” which is a reference to the Yi Jing ( I Ching: Book of Changes ).

Bagua Zhang, meaning "Eight Trigram Palm", is a complex, beautiful and mature "internal" martial style (see Xing Yi page on this website for a brief description of "internal" versus "external" styles of martial arts).

Baguazhang is one of the more modern martial arts. It is considered unique due to its circular footwork and use of Centripetal force across the force lines of attack. Bagua (8 Trigrams) Baguazhang is usually associated to the Bagua (8 Trigrams) as found in the Yi Jing.

Baguazhang is regarded as the most circular and spiraling system of Chinese martial arts. Its defining trait is perpetual movement and adaptability, enabling practitioners to engage in combat while constantly shifting positions. Xingyi quan is commonly referred to as Mind Form or Mind Intention boxing.
