BN inherited these 30 SD45's from the Northern Pacific. Over time BN removed the extra cab windows as well as the red warning gyrolight on the nose. In March 1973 the 6418 still in NP paint was severely damaged in a derailment near Skykomish, WA but was rebuilt, the only former NP SD45 I am aware of that was severely wrecked.

The F45 was just an SD45 with a full-width cowl carbody. Built from 1968 to 1971, this style of carbody was suppose to improve fuel economy by reducing wind drag. GN loved the idea and loved the looks of the F45.

I first saw the BN 6465 on a trip to Spokane, WA 8-4-71 on an eastbound BN freight led by 6477/6465/6632 (SD45/SD45/F45) and noted the 6465 as being in CB&Q colors. I took a photo of the BN 6465 at Interbay, WA 8-1-74 after arriving on train #179 with units 6465/6482.

This SD45 is the lead unit of a southbound freight south of Denver, CO on May 20, 1980. This southbound freight is seen near Sedgwick, AR in March 1984. This westbound freight is seen near Texline, TX on August 15, 1972.

It was the last SD45 built and was retired in December 1986. It was sold and became Morrison Knudson Corp 9415 and later rebuilt by MK as Southern Pacific 8690, a SD40-3M, on February 19, 1995. It was assigned Union Pacific 4716 and reassigned 2766.
