Pre-series production began in April 1981 and the car was introduced in the autumn that year. The E28 was initially produced with straight-four and straight-six petrol engines until 1983, when the 524td model became the first BMW car to be powered by a diesel engine.

The 524td was powered by BMW's M21D24 diesel engine. This 2.4L inline six turbodiesel engine generated 114hp, and was mated to both manual and automatic transmission options. The 524td was only available as a four door sedan, and was in production until 1988.
