After Yogiji Maharaj passed away in 1971, Pramukh Swami Maharaj became the spiritual head of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. He encourages millions of Hindus around the world to stay connected with their religious and cultural roots.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj was Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s fifth spiritual successor. He led by example; his humility, faith in Bhagwan Swaminarayan, and compassion inspired millions of devotees and over 1100 sadhus to maintain moral and spiritual lifestyles.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj (born Shantilal Patel; ordained Narayanswarupdas Swami; 7 December 1921 – 13 August 2016) was the guru and Pramukh, or president, of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a major branch of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, a Hindu denomination.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj is the fifth spiritual successor in Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s succession of Gunatit gurus, and he has uplifted and inspired spirituality in the lives of numerous people. Many aspirants have experienced the bliss of God in his presence.

The present spiritual leader of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Sanstha (BAPS), Pramukh Swami Maharaj, represents a succession of spirituality that began a little over 200 years ago in 1781. The year marked the birth of the founder of the Swaminarayan Faith, Lord Swaminarayan (1781-1830).

Pramukh Swami Maharaj was born in a very small village called Chansad on 7 December 1921 (Magshar sud 8, Vikram Samvat 1978). His father’s name was Motilal Prabhudas Patel, and his mother’s name was Diwaliba Patel, who came from the village of Menpur.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj has made BAPS into one of the world's most admired international Hindu organizations. He has built over 500 mandirs around the world.
