C. Iyothee Thass (20 May 1845 – 1914) was an Indian anti-caste activist and a practitioner of Siddha medicine. He famously converted to Buddhism and called upon the Paraiyars to do the same, arguing that this was their original religion. [1] . He also founded the Panchamar Mahajana Sabha in 1891 along with Rettamalai Srinivasan.

Born as Kathavarayan on May 20, 1845, in Royapettah, Chennai, Iyothee Thass belonged to a family of practitioners of traditional Siddha medicine. His father Kanthappan worked as a servant to British officer Francis Whyte Ellis, who was a scholar of Tamil and Sanskrit.

The traditionally educated nineteenth century Tamil scholar, Pandit Iyothee Thass as well as the twentieth century western educated intellectual from Maharashtra, Babasaheb Ambedkar, embraced Buddhism to show that it was the only way to annihilate the caste system.
