The axatse ( /ˈɑː.hɑː.tʃeɪˌ/ or /ˈɑː.hɑː.tseɪˌ/) is a West African rattle-like percussion instrument. [1][2] The axatse is traditionally a dried gourd, wrapped in a beaded net. The axatse originated in Ghana, Togo and in the Volta Region by the Ewe people.

The axatse is made from a dried bottleneck-shaped gourd with the top of the neck cut off and its natural contents removed. The gourd becomes an empty vessel with a circular opening cut into the side of its neck.

This gourd shaker is traditionally known as the axatse (ah-HOT-say) in Ghana, and is also known more generically as the shekere (SHEH-kuh-ray). Each dry, hollow calabash is hand selected for thickness and proportion, then dressed with a lattice work of Jobs Tear Seeds.

The next instrument used in traditional Ewe drumming is called axatse (pronounced ah-hah-chay). The axatse is a rattle-like instrument made from a hollowed-out gourd covered with a net of seeds or beads. The axatse is usually played sitting down.

The "axatse" is held loosely around the neck of the gourd with one hand, while the other hand acts as a stationary, striking mallet. The gourd is rhythmically raised up and down in between the striking mallet hand and the thigh of the player to produce sound and create rhythms.

The atoke, gankogui, and axatse sound the rhythmic foundation. The atoke is a high pitched gong played with an iron rod. The Gankogui is a clapperless double bell that is pounded in shape rather than cast. It produces much less audible high partials than western bells ("purer" fundamental) and is played with a stick.

Play the axatse part at a moderate tempo (if an axatse is not available, substitute a gourd rattle, shekere, or maraca). Instruct students to place their right hand, palm down, on their right leg (this is the hand that will eventually hold the axatse)
