The Steyr AUG HBAR (Heavy Barrelled Automatic Rifle), also known as the AUG LMG (light machine gun), is essentially an automatic rifle variant of the AUG. It features a heavier and longer 621 mm (24.4 in) barrel with an integrated bipod, and the standard AUG receiver with 1.5× magnification scope.

The light machine gun variant can be modified to fire from an open bolt (called the AUG LMG in this configuration). To accomplish this, a modified bolt carrier, striker and trigger mechanism with sear are used. Based on the AUG, Steyr developed the 9 mm AUG submachine gun that fires the 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridge.

The acronym AUG actually translates to “universal army rifle“, or “Armee-Universal-Gewehr“. The AUG was designed to serve as an assault rifle, an LMG, and even a DMR. Steyr introduced this design in a bullpup, which was very new and unconventional to alot of people.
