The bacteria or virus that starts an ear infection gains access to the middle ear through the Eustachion Tube – which those with Atresia have. With an ear infection, the pain we associate with the acute otitis media is caused by the eardrum bulging outward with the pressure from the infection and pus in the middle ear.

The hearing range for Alyssa’s left (non-Microtic/Atretic) ear is at or near a 10dB/20dB level within normal hearing sensitivity 500-4000 HZ. Loss of hearing is likely a conductive hearing loss with the absence of an ear canal and a functional cochlea.

Mar 6, 2024 · For the past eight years, Ear Community has been collaborating with Auregen Biotherapeutics for an ear of the future that would help children and adults born with microtia and atresia. Last fall, Auregen began clinical trials on 3D printed regenerated ears that would help individuals born with unilateral microtia.

An ENT can perform what is called a “deep microscopic” ear cleaning to remove the dead skin cells. Will an ear that has had Canalplasty performed still leak ear wax (cerumin)? No. Once canalplasty has been performed, the ear will not leak ear wax as the non-Microtic/Atretic ear will.

As of 2015, a prosthetic ear can be made to slip over or fit over an existing Microtic ear without having to remove the ear (as required years ago). The prosthetic ear would have to be fastened on with glue, adhering to the skin.
