Personally I like to buff both unit types with armor, but melee buffs are surprisingly effective on all ashigaru too. Being able to use your archers as backup shock infantry has its own benefits.

Jan 9, 2020 · I usually write long paragraphs but this time it simply comes down to an observation I've noticed in Shogun 2. Ashigaru dominate the spear class, samurai dominate the sword class, and monks dominate the bow class. Samurai form the majority of cavalry and therefore dominate the cavalry class while the Portuguese dominate the matchlock class.
