Position Matchlocks so their first rank is just behind the last rank of LYA. Personally I like to buff both unit types with armor, but melee buffs are surprisingly effective on all ashigaru too. Being able to use your archers as backup shock infantry has its own benefits.

Ashigaru dominate the spear class, samurai dominate the sword class, and monks dominate the bow class. Samurai form the majority of cavalry and therefore dominate the cavalry class while the Portuguese dominate the matchlock class.
