Eiji has always had people who cared for him instead. I think that to Eiji Ash was who made him feel special. Everyone else agreed that Eiji is a very ordinary boy, but he is underrated, he is more clever than he seems. Ash was a genius who recognized Eiji as an equal.

More than sympathy, even, when Eiji explained how losing Ash would make him go crazy with anxiety and grief. That seemed like a massive turning point for him in particular.
