Clara Peeters (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈklaːraː ˈpeːtərs]; fl. 1607–1621) was a Flemish still-life painter from Antwerp who worked in both the Spanish Netherlands and Dutch Republic. [1] Still Life with Cheeses, Almonds and Pretzels, c. 1615, with the "signed knife", and a reflection of the painter on the rim of the jug lid.

Clara Peeters (baptized May 15, 1594, Antwerp, Belgium—died after 1657?) was a Flemish still-life painter known for her meticulous brushwork, sophisticated arrangement of materials, low angle of perspective, and ability to capture precisely the textures of the varied objects she painted.

Clara Peeters (fl. 1607–1621) was a still-life painter who came from Antwerp and trained in the tradition of Flemish Baroque painting, but probably made her career mostly in the new Dutch Republic, as part of Dutch Golden Age painting.

Clara Peeters’s considerable skill at rendering naturalistic texture and detail is on full display in Still Life of Fish and Cat. In this work, she realistically depicted household abundance, without the subtle moral or subtext often associated with still lifes.

The only Flemish woman known to have specialized in still life painting as early as the first decade of the seventeenth century, Clara Peeters is a pioneer among female Old Masters.

Jun 27, 2024 · Clara Peeters was a skilled artist who helped popularise the emerging still-life genre, being one of the first women artists to contribute to its spreading. Through her creativity and skill, she managed to put her mark on Dutch and Flemish early modern art, influencing the artists that followed.

Jun 27, 2018 · Clara Peeters was a still life painter of the Flemish Baroque. Everything we know about her came from her paintings, so the biographical information we have is very limited. For example, her place of birth is not documented, there is no information of a possible wedding and we don’t know who trained her.

Thirty-nine known paintings today bear the signature of Clara Peeters or an inscription with her name; a few unsigned works can also be plausibly attributed to her. Some of her paintings must have been lost. Eleven of her known works bear dates. The earliest are from 1607 and 1608.
