Armor bearer is a military-ish position, but he was just Saul's personal bodyguard, which was not Abner's concern. Chapter 16:14-23 summarizes the meeting and relationship of Saul and David, and the Goliath incident can be inserted into it as the point at which David becomes known to Saul and his servants.
