Results of a molecular study published in 2008 showed that the Asian small-clawed otter is a sister taxon of Lutrogale, lending support to retaining the genus Amblonyx or expanding Aonyx to make it monophyletic.

With a total body length of 730 to 960 mm (28.6 to 37.6 in), it is the smallest otter species in the world. The Asian small-clawed otter's native range comprises parts of India to Southeast Asia including the islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Palawan.

The Oriental small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus ), also known as the Asian small-clawed otter is an otter species native to South and Southeast Asia. It has short claws that do not extend beyond the pads of its webbed digits. It is the smallest otter species in the world.

Primarily diurnal, although reported to be nocturnal or crepuscular when found close to humans. During the day, Asian Small-clawed Otters often rest and groom on grassy or sandy banks near water. In marshes, they use mostly islands. Resting sites often show signs of spraint smearing, a behavior also observed in captivity.

The Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinerea syn. Amblonyx cinereus), also known as the oriental small-clawed otter or simply small-clawed otter, is a semiaquatic mammal native to South and Southeast Asia.

Based on canonical variate and Wagner analysis of morphological data from the 13 extant taxa, van Zyll de Jong (1987; 1991) identified two principal clades – the first group includes Amblonyx, Aonyx, Enhydra and Lontra, while the second group consists of Lutra, Lutrogale and Pteroneura.

Amblonyx cinereus (Fig. 1) can be differentiated from other otters by its small size (mass, <3.5 kg; greatest length of skull, <90 mm), and by claws that are greatly reduced in size on all feet (van Zyll de Jong 1972).
