There are two types of alpaca: Huacaya (which produce a dense, soft, crimpy sheep-like fiber), and the Suri (with silky pencil-like locks, resembling dreadlocks but without matted fibers). Alpacas are a species of South American camelid that are bred for their luxurious fiber. They come in a variety of colors, ranging from white to black, and everything in between. Each color has its own unique characteristics and is prized for its beauty and versatility.

Alpaca fiber has the same softness comfort as wool at higher micron levels. Alpaca must be processed slower than wool, but has better yield. Alpaca has lower resistance to compression than wool. Alpaca fleece has a great variety of natural colors, making it very much in vogue: 16 official colors (white; beige; and shades of fawn, brown, black, and grey) with many other subtle shades and hues.

We have a lovely selection of white alpacas, chosen for their density, the feltability of their fiber and or course their crimp. Our favorite color of alpaca is black. It is hard to find many true black natural fiber animals, but alpaca are naturally black. Our grey animals are next in our grouping.

White to black and everything in between, plus beautiful fawns and browns. The color spectrum for alpaca fiber is rich. According Alpaca Canada there are 22 basic colors, most of which are shown in the color wheel above. And then there are color variations for everything in between.
