Apr 9, 2022 · Creating my first Baybayin font Niwang Uno with a font-making software called Glyphs Mini. Baybayin is not an alphabet, but an abugida. The English alphabet uses consonants and vowels like “A”, “B”, “C” and “E”, whereas Baybayin uses syllables and single vowels like “A” “Ba”, “Ka”, and “Nga”.

Baybayin is an ancient script used in the Philippines before Spanish colonization. Also (inaccurately ‡) known as Alibata, this script was historically primarily used by the Tagalog people, and is used by Filipinos more broadly today.

For many years the script was incorrectly referred to as “alibata,” based on the arrangement of another alphabet system – Arabic, in which the first letters a Baybayin is one of the precolonial writing systems used by early Filipinos.
