Sea otters live in shallow water areas along the shores of the North Pacific. Most of the sea otter habitat in Alaska has now been repopulated although populations in Southwest declined sharply in the 1990s.

But upon closer inspection, the almost comically adorable faces of a raft of playful sea otters pop up from behind cresting waves, their hind feet pointing toward the sky.

The northern sea otter subspecies (E. lutris kenyoni), is found in the Aleutian Islands, Southern Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington. Within Alaska, there are 3 stocks. The Southeast stock can be found in the coastal waters of Southeast Alaska.
