Mar 20, 2014 · There's 2 dubs. The 1989 Streamline dub, the original. Usually mocked for being hokey. But some people prefer the original, and the 2001 dub by Pioneer. Both are dubs so expect that dub feeling or whatever. I enjoy the Pioneer 2001 dub, also the first version I saw. I've never seen the Streamline dub so I'm not sure if it's better or worse.

Aug 3, 2016 · Emotionally I might prefer the Streamline dub a bit, it is more fun, but it's honestly also partly because my first copy of Akira was the Widescreen VHS release with that dub on it. Intellectually, the Pioneer dub is a better translation, and some of the re-wording makes the dialogue make more sense in context.

Dec 17, 2016 · There are two English dubs of the film: The "Streamline Dub", so named because it appeared on Streamline Video's VHS release of Akira, but was also used on Laserdisc releases. This is the dub featuring Cam Newton; some fans love it, some fans seem to really dislike it.

One of them, which many grew up with is a Streamline-distributed version, which even today, is grating, laughable, difficult to take seriously, and downright atrocious.
