The Red Lake is a large lake in the west of the Old Kingdom near Mount Abed [1]. The Lightning Trap is by the side of the lake, and it is here that Hedge [2] uses thousands of Dead Southerlings to excavate it. The two nearest settlements are the towns of Uppside and Edge [3].

With the help of their familiars Mogget and the Disreputable Dog, protagonists Lirael and Sameth escape the House and depart for the Red Lake, where the Destroyer is being unearthed, to rescue Sameth's friend Nicholas Sayre from the Destroyer's control, and prevent the Destroyer from consuming the world.

The Old Kingdom, or Abhorsen in North America, is a fantasy series written by Australian author Garth Nix. It originated in 1995 with the novel Sabriel and has continued in the novels Lirael (2001), Abhorsen (2003) and Goldenhand (2016).
