Aug 10, 2020 · I think his face is less shock that Aang knows the technique, and more of a "oh fuck I'm gonna die" situation. Until Aang decides (at the last moment) to shoot the lightning away from both of them, it genuinely looks like he's going to kill Ozai with it.

Aang was shocked by the revelation that an Avatar trained the Dai Li, stating that they were "the worst, most corrupt earthbenders in the world". Avatar Kyoshi explained that she thought it was a wise decision at the time and stated that all actions have an effect, whether positive or negative, for many lifetimes.

Part of the reason Ozai looks so shocked is that he recognizes the technique Aang is using. Zuko is the only person he’s seen redirect lightning, and that was right after Zuko swore to join the avatar and help him defeat Ozai.
