During the sixth assessment cycle ( October 2015 to July 2023) the IPCC produced the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) with contributions by its three Working Groups and a Synthesis Report, three Special Reports, and a refinement to its latest Methodology Report.

The SSP scenarios assessed in the AR6 offer more scope to explore SLCF pathways as they sample a broader range of air quality policy options (Gidden et al., 2019) and relationships of CO 2 to non-CO 2 greenhouse gases (Meinshausen et al., 2020). Section 4.6.2.2 assesses RCP and SSP differences.

Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) are climate change scenarios of projected socioeconomic global changes up to 2100 as defined in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report on climate change in 2021. [2] .

A new set of climate scenarios has been developed with respect to the sixth IPCC report (IPCC AR6), the "Shared Socioeconomic Pathways" (SSPs). Compared to the previously used RCPs, the new SSP scenarios have been improved in a variety of ways.

The IPCC Sixth report did not estimate the likelihoods of the scenarios [1]: 12 but a 2020 commentary described SSP5–8.5 as highly unlikely, SSP3–7.0 as unlikely, and SSP2–4.5 as likely. [2] However, a report citing the above commentary shows that RCP8.5 is the best match to the cumulative emissions from 2005 to 2020. [3]

May 8, 2024 · The IPCC began its sixth assessment reporting cycle (AR6) in 2021. The AR6 assessment reports use SSP-RCP (‘SSPX-Y’) scenarios based on the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs), and partly informed by the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) scenarios of AR5.

Jul 19, 2024 · The IPCC report (AR6, 2021) kept the 4 scenarios of the last report (AR5, 2014) for coherence but also introduces 3 new ones: RCP 1.9, 3.4 and 7.0. RCP1.9 focuses in limiting warming to below 1.5°C, the aspirational goal of the Paris Agreement.

A core set of five SSP scenarios, namely SSP1–1.9, SSP1 –2.6, SSP2–4.5, SSP3 –7.0 and SSP5 –8.5, was selected in the AR6 WGI report to fill certain gaps identified in the RCPs.
