The 351 in the ’71 Boss was Ford’s 351-cid Cleveland engine, nicknamed for the Ohio plant that built it. The 351C shared little more than bore and stroke spacing dimensions with the 351 Windsor used in the 1969 Mustang.

The Boss 351 engine (R-code), confusingly dubbed HO in some Ford brochures, was based on the already formidable 351C four-barrel.

The Boss 351 carried an appearance all its own, and actually showcased a look that was more reminiscent of Mach 1 series Mustangs, than its Boss series counterparts. In many ways, the Boss 351 was significantly larger than the Boss 302 and 429 before it.

In factory guise, Ford's venerable Boss 351 utilized Boss 302 heads, a solid-lifter cam and shot peened and magnafluxed rods to turn stout 11 to 1 compression into an honest 330 horsepower. Today, this big coupe makes roughly 100 more horses thanks to a mild cam upgrade.

Had the Boss 351 been used in the lighter and better balanced 1970 Boss 302, it may have been remember as one of the most legendary Mustangs.
