When I go to a web site that calculates wire size (my situation is single phase 50 amps of power, 220v, 25' of wire from the panel to the receptacle) I get a wire size of #12 copper.

Niether the receptilce nor the circuit breaker had instructions. Maybe I did not xplain the situation good enough. There are four wires on the recepticle.

Jun 6, 2009 · 6-3 is used for a 120/240 circuit but an AC generally uses straight 240v so no neutral needed. Yes, in the USA you would remark the white wire black. or red. Where the confusion comes in for novices is they are familiar with stoves and dryer that have some parts that run on 120 volts and some parts that run on 240v.

Southwire calculator on the net says #6 wire and specifically says #8 cannot carry 50 amps current when you try to calculate the max length of a 50 amp circuit using #8. The sign at the Big Orange store says #8 for a 50 amp circuit.
