On 1 April 1970, the 3960th SW was discontinued and replaced by the 43rd Bomb Wing, which became the 43rd Strategic Wing. In July, it also assumed resources and mission of the Bombardment Wing, Provisional, 4133rd , [ 11 ] which had operational control over B-52s striking targets in Southeast Asia.

Established as the 43rd Bombardment Wing, Very Heavy on Nov. 3, 1947. Organized Nov. 17, 1947 at Davis Monthan Field (later AFB), Arizona. The newly formed wing's first task was to get the B-29s out of mothballs, make them serviceable and train crews to fly them.

Trained for bombardment operations during most of 1941. From Dec 1941-Feb 1942, flew antisubmarine patrols along New England coast. Moved to Southwest Pacific via Capetown, South Africa, Feb-Mar 1942.

During 1948 the 43d Bombardment Wing became the first Air Force Unit to be equipped with the new Boeing B-50 bomber. Ground schools and air training were the order of the day as combat crews and maintenance personnel became acquainted with their new weapon.
