In Nordic mythology, Austri, Vestri, Norðri and Suðri (Old Norse pronunciation: [ˈɔustre, ˈwestre, ˈnorðre, ˈsuðre]) [citation needed]; are four dwarfs who hold up the sky after it was made by the gods from the skull of the jötunn Ymir.

Four dwarves, Austri, Vestri, Nordri, and Sudri (“East,” “West,” “North,” and “South”) hold aloft the four corners of the sky, evidencing their colossal strength. The lines between the dwarves, elves, and dead humans are very blurry.

The Prose and Poetic Eddas, which form the foundation of what we know today concerning Norse mythology, contain many names of dwarfs.

A dwarf (pl. dwarfs or dwarves) is a type of supernatural being in Germanic folklore.Accounts of dwarfs vary significantly throughout history. They are commonly, but not exclusively, presented as living in mountains or stones and being skilled craftsmen.

While they are not revered like the gods and goddesses, nor infamous like the giants and giantesses, the dwarves of Norse mythology are as vital to the major storylines of Viking lore as the Aesir, Vanir, and Jotnar.

Dwarves in Norse mythology are among the most well-known fantasy creatures to emerge from the Nordic landscape. Often aligned with elves, another popular Nordic creature, dwarves were considered to be beings of incredible strength and skill.
