Jul 11, 2022 · Of the seven 300 SLRs originally built with Spider bodywork, chassis 0002/55 was the only example never to be raced. Instead, it served principally as Mercedes’ development mule. The new car (registered AW 84 7984) was first spotted in early April as Mercedes conducted a series of tests on Italian soil to prepare for the Mille Miglia.

The 300 SLR was the sports car version of the W196, Mercedes-Benz's Formula 1 car for 1954 and 1955. For the sports car version, the W196 chassis was slightly reworked; it was widened a little in the middle to accommodate two seats.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR (W 196 S) is a two-seat sports racing car that took part in the 1955 World Sportscar Championship before a catastrophic crash and fire at Le Mans later that year ended its domination prematurely.
