Introduction Karst is a distinctive type of landscape or topography that commonly occurs where carbonate strata (limestones and dolostones) are at the surface. The term karst originates from northwestern Yugoslavia where karst was first described scientifically. Simply put, karst is a landscape formed by rock that dissolves to create features like caves, sinkholes, springs, and underground rivers.

The Indiana Karst Conservancy is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and conservation of Indiana’s unique karst features. The IKC was formed by concerned individuals when it was apparent that no similar group was actively protecting the features for their geological, biological and archeological importance.

Two well-developed areas of karst landscape are present in Indiana. The first, the Mitchell Plateau, is a broad limestone karst plateau dissected by a few major stream systems and is located in southern Indiana. This plateau developed on Mississippian limestones and extends from the eastern part of Owen County southward to the Ohio River in Harrison County.
