The Monongahela National Forest is considered by The Nature Conservancy to be in an area of global ecological importance. Much of this diversity can be attributed to the wide variations in elevation and the resulting patterns of precipitation.

Jun 14, 2022 · The CCC contributed greatly to Monongahela National Forest by constructing roads, trails, fire towers and telephone lines; fighting forest fires; reforesting denuded and eroded landscape; and building many of Monongahela National Forest’s first developed recreation areas.

Firearms on National Forest Lands; FIREWORKS. Use of fireworks or other explosives within campgrounds and other recreation areas is prohibited. METAL DETECTORS. Metal detector use is only allowed at beaches in developed campgrounds and picnic areas for surface collection, unless otherwise posted.

The Monongahela National Forest is a recreation destination and major tourism attraction. The extensive backwoods road and trail system is available for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. There are many miles of railroad grades that are a link in the recreation use of the forest.

Monongahela National Forest includes 115,000 acres of Wilderness designated under the National Wilderness Preservation System. Two Wilderness Areas were designated in 1975: Dolly Sods and Otter Creek. Three Wilderness Areas were added in 1983: Cranberry, Laurel Fork North and Laurel Fork South.

Although none of the Forest is on the main stem of the Monongahela River, much of the original purchase unit and of the area actually designated as National Forest in 1920 was within the Monongahela Basin.
