Presch (1973) divided the family Teiidae (in the traditional sense) into two separate families, Teiidae (in the strict sense, comprising the genera Ameiva, Aspidoscelis (revalidated subsequently), Callopistes, Cnemidophorus, Crocodilurus, Dicrodon, Dracaena, Kentropyx, Teius, Tupinambis) and Gymnophthalmidae (comprising the remaining genera).
