The Pratt & Whitney PW4000 is a family of dual-spool, axial-flow, high-bypass turbofan aircraft engines produced by Pratt & Whitney as the successor to the JT9D. It was first run in April 1984, was FAA certified in July 1986, and was introduced in June 1987.

Pratt & Whitney has taken its successful PW4000 100-inch engine for the Airbus A330 to new heights with the introduction of the PW4170 Advantage70™ program. The Advantage70 is offered as a new engine and as an upgrade kit for existing engines.

Only a small number of aircraft, operated by Thai International, have PW4164 engines. The largest A330-300 fleets with PW4168 engines are operated by Korean Air, Air Berlin and Malaysia Airlines. The later PW4168A powers more aircraft, operated by Asiana Airlines, Delta, Korean Air, and USAirways.

The PW4168A powers the smaller A330-200 and later build A330-300s, while the PW4168A-1D powers the A330-300. The most recent variant is the PW4170. This is rated at 70,000lbs thrust and powers the A330-200F. The PW4170 is the newest PW4000-100 model.

The Advantage70 engine reduces fuel consumption over the baseline PW4168A engine by one percent, providing a direct savings of about $235,000 per aircraft per year. The fuel savings also means that each Advantage70-powered aircraft reduces its output of carbon by about 1.5 million pounds per year.
