NGC 48 is a Intermediate Spiral Galaxy in the Andromeda constellation. NGC 48 is situated north of the celestial equator and, as such, it is more easily visible from the northern hemisphere. Given its B magnitude of 15, NGC 48 is visible with the help of a telescope having an aperture of 20 inches (500mm) or more.

The group consists of the three NGC galaxies NGC 48, 49 and 51 which were first discovered by Lewis Swift in 1885 using a 16” refractor and three IC galaxies IC 1534, 1535 and 1536, all discovered by Barnard in 1888 using a 12” refractor. The clusters appears to be two parallel triplets with the NGC group and the IC group.

NGC 51 was the brightest and showed a core. NGC 48 was distinctly oval, the largest of the three but lacked a core, NGC 49 was the hardest to locate but with averted vision a core was discerned. The three nearby IC galaxies were fainter, especially 1536.
