Dec 21, 2003 · I would say though, that teaching yourself Hapkido from a book will be almost impossible in my opinion. There are far too many very small, technical positioning and movements involved in the technique that have to be seen and felt to properly execute them without hurting yourself or someone else accidentally.

Aug 7, 2003 · Traditional Hapkido has no sport component. TKD does, of course. Another difference between most styles of Hapkido and TKD is that the former have no forms, whereas TKD uses forms extensively. I realize that there are Hapkido kwans that use forms, but the art originally taught by Choi Young Sool has no forms.

Obviously, it looks like his school is more than just Hapkido, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless. Oh, and I'm definitely not trying to start any "Hapkido vs. BJJ" discussion! Just thought it was interesting that's all.

Sep 28, 2004 · My uncle used to train in hapkido and I went to a class and trained with him quite a bit while he was still training in it. The emphasis seemed to be wrist locks, standing locks, and takedowns. He showed me some grappling (my first introduction to it btw) which his instructor got from BJJ and never claimed it was part of hapkido.

Aug 18, 2012 · Hapkido as I'm learning it is largely self defense oriented. joint locks, grabs, throws, coupled with kicks and strikes are the arsenal of weapons we learn to employ in various ways. Some schools teach forms but they arent "kata" as you'd call it.

Mar 23, 2013 · Hey I actually train at Master Ken's Dojo for Taekwondo and Hapkido, Master Ken received his black belt last year and our highest level in our Hapkido class in a green belt. I love training there personally, its a great program!
