HMS Ajax was a Leander -class light cruiser which served with the Royal Navy during World War II. She became famous for her part in the Battle of the River Plate, the Battle of Crete, the Battle of Malta and as a supply escort in the siege of Tobruk. This ship was the eighth in the Royal Navy to bear the name.

HMS Ajax was a 78-gun third rate launched in 1835 as HMS Vanguard. She was renamed HMS Ajax in 1867 and was broken up in 1875. HMS Ajax (1880) was an Ajax -class ironclad battleship launched in 1880 and sold in 1904.

HMS Ajax was the third of four King George V -class dreadnought battleships built for the Royal Navy in the early 1910s. After commissioning in 1913, she spent the bulk of her career assigned to the Home and Grand Fleets.

HMS AJAX attended anniversary celebrations for South of France Landings with CinC Mediterranean, embarked. She refitted in Malta at the end of 1945 and on completion visited ports in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.

HMS Ajax fought at the Battle of the River Plate on 13th December 1939, and with Achilles and Cumberland was present at the subsequent blockade off Montevideo that culminated in the Admiral Graf Spee scuttling herself on December 17th.

Dec 17, 2016 · The German warship opened fire while closing in at full speed with Ajax in its crosshairs. HMS Exeter received most of the blows as her forward turrets were disabled while Ajax and Achilles closed ranged. Ajax took a total of seven hits to her structure that resulted in the loss of her two aft turrets.

HMS Ajax was a King George V-class battleship (one of four ships of the class). Ajax was laid down at Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering, Greenock yard on 27 February 1911. She was launched on 21 March 1912 and completed in March 1913.
