This company is the largest open faced granite quarry in the world and it is from its existence that Mount Airy earned the moniker "The Granite City". The NCGC still operates today although it has not used rail service for many years.

Yadkin Railroad, from Salisbury to Norwood, 41.15 miles. The Yadkin Railroad was proposed to run from Salisbury to Albemarle and on to Norwood, which was a pretty active industrial town back in the 1870s, then on to Wadesboro in Anson County, NC. In fact, the charter for the railroad was granted on April 5, 1871.
