Genuine question, as someone who has not worked for a FAANG company what is it about those companies that is so attractive to so many candidates?

I've heard the target schools (Berkeley, Stanford, CMU, MIT, GATech, UIUC, UMich) have a very strong recruiting presence, but you can get to FAANG from anywhere. However, from what I've understood you'd have to cold-apply yourself from lower-ranked colleges, which would make it harder to be noticed.

Currently, I would like to shoot for an internship at a FAANG internship for summer 2021 as a rising sophomore such as Google's STEP and Facebook University. I would like to boost my chances of receiving a FAANG internship while being at a less known college.

People who got FAANG+ internships (or any coveted internship) without prior experience, what side projects did you do?

Aug 15, 2021 · I worked at FAANG and then left for my current job where we have a union, a pension, better working hours, etc. The only thing I miss is the company-wide channels with the experts and founders in a lot of technologies.

Recently, however, I've been looking at articles and videos which claim that the expenses one incurs make living there very unreasonable.
