Dec 2, 2020 · Like the original R80 G/S, the R100 GS had a boxer twin engine, with two-valve heads, shaft drive and five-speed gearbox, derived from the era’s street bike engines. The GS had lower compression than BMW’s asphalt-only versions of the machine (R100 RS, etc.), to run on lower-quality gasoline in remote areas.

Apr 7, 2017 · Nice work on the refurb. It's good to see that you have the front fender sorted. In 1988 BMW had an idea that didn't work great: one fender and two fork braces to allow the fender to be mounted high or low. First they mounted the fender low as shown in the ad below and it would catch a knob on the Metzler Sahara 3 and fold up under itself.

Jan 21, 2006 · I have a '77-8 R100. I have an 85 R80. I also have a newly acquired 91 R100. The 77 R100 is the roughest ... but it's still very smooth by most standards. The 85 is pure frickin' silk. The engine and tranny in it is matched and perfect. It's crazy how smooth it is. The 91 is extremely smooth. Close to the R80 but not quite.

May 21, 2015 · Depending on the year of the bike, BMW had specific relays that added functionality to the electronics such as a diode... If your bike originally had a starter relay with a diode, and you replace it with a $5 generic relay without, then you'll want to consider investigating other methods of incorporating that diode into your elec system.

Aug 15, 2010 · Given that this represents atleast a couple hundred dollars I'm considering going a different direction. I'm not a fan of the appearance of the universal bar-mount M/C installs I've seen, and I'm appalled at the cost of getting the correct BMW parts to replace the whole throttle housing, switch gear, m/c, etc.

Jun 10, 2013 · Even plugs of the correct heat range will carbon up from use of the enrichers and not get cleaned up on such short runs but there may be some point in going one grade hotter to a BP6ES. The way I look at it is the BMW specified the plug heat range to be safe at anything up to flat out maximum speed which is a very long way from your current use.

I bought an R100 (1983) last year. Lately it has been idling around 750 rpms and stalling out and I need to up the rpms at idle. When I bought it it idled above 1000 right where the gen light starts to flicker. All my reading says, adjust the valves and synch the carbs THEN adjust the idle. OK. Never done this before.
