On October 7, 2001, at 6:30 pm local time, the first wave of attack against the Taliban was launched. A group of United States Air Force (USAF) bombers consisting of five B-1s and ten B-52s took off from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.

Soon after arriving in Afghanistan, on October 21, Markham found himself in the control tower at Bagram looking out incredulously at Taliban forces spread out just east of the runway as he prepared to call in air strikes against them. “As a certified air traffic controller,” he quipped, “there is no better place to be than in the tower.”
