The FA would compete head-on with the immensely popular F units of EMD. Although the FA lost the battle with the F unit, it was much more successful than the PA in terms of sales. The FA would, like the PA, go down in history as one of the most handsome diesel locomotives ever built.

Designed by Alco, an established steam locomotive company, the FA was designed to compete with the EMD (GM) E- and F-Unit early diesel locomotives. Though more striking in appearance, the Alcos soon faded from the scene as GM dominated the early diesel scene.
