The Isenheim Altarpiece is an altarpiece sculpted and painted by, respectively, the Germans Nikolaus of Haguenau and Matthias Grünewald in 1512–1516. [1] It is on display at the Unterlinden Museum at Colmar, Alsace, in France.

Constructed and painted between 1512 and 1516, the enormous moveable altarpiece, essentially a box of statues covered by folding wings, was created to serve as the central object of devotion in an Isenheim hospital built by the Brothers of St. Anthony. St. Anthony was a patron saint of those suffering from skin diseases.

Isenheim Altarpiece, panels painted in oils on a sculpted altarpiece created by German artist Matthias Grünewald about 1512 to 1515. Little is known of Grünewald’s life, but he is famous for his undisputed masterpiece, the large folding altar painted for the Monastery of St. Anthony hospital chapel at Isenheim in Alsace, then part of Germany.

Between 1512 and 1516, the artists Niclaus of Haguenau (for the sculpted portion) and Grünewald (for the painted panels) created this celebrated altarpiece for the Antonite order’s monastic complex at Isenheim, a village about 15 miles south of Colmar.

One of the greatest Renaissance paintings of the 16th-century, this complex polyptych altarpiece was created by the German artist we now know as Matthias Grunewald, about the same time that Raphael was decorating the Vatican in Rome.

May 27, 2024 · Painted between 1512-1516 and attributed to Matthias Grünewald, it is now at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. We had the rare opportunity to interview the director and the chief restorer of the museum and talk to them about this particular masterpiece.

Mar 21, 2024 · In four years, Nikolaus Hagenauer (responsible for the sculpture) and Matthias Grünewald (in charge of the painted panels), created a complex polyptych about suffering, which decorated the high altar of the monastery hospital’s chapel until the French Revolution.
