Following the war, the question of Denmark’s southern border arose once again as the Danish minority in German-controlled South Schleswig called for incorporation with Denmark. The idea won strong support among the local population, but in Denmark opinion was divided.

The South Schleswig Voter Federation (SSW) is a small yet significant political party in Germany, known for its representation of the Danish and Frisian minorities in the northern region of Schleswig-Holstein.

Approximately 60,000 Danish residents live in Schleswig-Holstein, and the next largest number are Frisians, who speak North Frisian. The local political party organized by them to protect their rights and interests is the South Schleswig Voters' Union.

There is a Danish minority (about 50,000, according to government sources) in the northernmost state of Schleswig-Holstein. Eastern and Northern Frisians live at Schleswig-Holstein's western coast, and in the north-western part of Lower Saxony. They are part of a wider community stretching from Germany to the northern Netherlands.
