Established 1 January 1983, United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) as its name implies, covers the “central” area of the globe located between the European and Pacific Commands. In 1979, the Iranian Revolution and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan highlighted the need to strengthen U.S. interests in the region in the Middle East.

The U.S. CENTCOM area of responsibility (AOR) spans more than 4 million square miles and is populated by more than 560 million people from 25 ethnic groups, speaking 20 languages with hundreds of dialects and confessing multiple religions which transect national borders.
CENTCOM COALITION
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Coalition at MacDill Air Force Base (AFB) in Tampa, Florida, is one of the largest military coalitions in U.S. history. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, the coalition began to form with a common purpose – to fight terrorism.
