Alonso Álvarez de Pineda (Spanish: [piˈneða]; 1494–1520) was a Spanish conquistador and cartographer who was the first to prove the insularity of the Gulf of Mexico by sailing around its coast. In doing so he created the first map to depict what is now Texas and parts of the Gulf Coast of the United States.

When the ships of the 1519 voyage returned to Jamaica, the pilots presented Garay with a map sketch of the entire Gulf coast in more or less accurate proportions.

Spanish explorer and mapmaker Captain Alonso Alvarez de Pineda and his crew were probably the first Europeans in Texas, claiming it for Spain. Little is known of Pineda’s early life, but in 1517, he sailed for the Spanish Governor of Jamaica, Francisco de Garay.

Jul 1, 2010 · Given that, let me state that Alonso Álvarez de Pineda was the first European to lay eyes on Mustang Island—at least its eastern shore. It was 1519, and this Spaniard was on a royal mission to map the unknown shoreline between Florida and Veracruz—essentially, nothing less than the northern and western boundaries of the Gulf of Mexico!

Alonso Álvarez de Pineda mapped the Gulf Coast, including the Texas coastline, in 1519, marking the first detailed European charting of the area. Pineda’s expedition was commissioned by Governor Francisco Garay and aimed to find a water passage to the Pacific Ocean.

He not only stopped numerous times along the unfamiliar coastline, but made comprehensive maps of each area he encountered with notes about the settlers and their cultures. Before leaving the Caribbean, Francisco Garay gave Alvarez de Piñeda instructions to intercept the flotilla commanded by Hérnan Cortés (1485-1547) in Vera Cruz.

Jan 1, 1996 · Early in 1520 the pilots who had sailed the previous year with Alonso Álvarez de Pineda laid before the Spanish crown an outline sketch of the Gulf of Mexico. This crude rendering, which survives in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, represents the beginning of the Spanish mapping of Texas.
