New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that the state is temporarily shutting down all live bird markets in New York City and Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties through February 14 after inspectors discovered seven cases of bird flu in poultry.

All live poultry markets in New York City and some of its suburbs were ordered Friday to close for a week after the detection of seven cases of avian flu, which has also hit farms nationwide, led to the slaughter of millions of birds and driven up egg prices.

New York state officials have ordered a one-week shutdown of live bird markets in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester after positive cases of avian flu were detected in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.
