When the sural nerve is inflamed due to compression it can cause numbness, pain and burning down the lateral aspect of the Achilles tendon and into the lateral foot (small toe of the foot).
The sural nerve provides sensation for the outer side of the foot and once it is removed, sensation will most likely be permanently lost, or possibly just altered, on the outer side of the foot.
