A National Geographic photographer reports he had run-in with a great white shark under water just four feet from him off the coast of Harpswell last week.

The fifth shark attack in two weeks off Long Island was reported Wednesday evening. A 49-year-old man from Arizona was bitten by a shark shortly after 6 p.m. at Seaview Beach, Suffolk police said.

A 20 foot basking shark was spotted in the Great Salt Pond near Block Island on Memorial Day. The species is considered vulnerable but sightings are fairly common, especially out close to the ocean.
