The Pittsburgh Penguins sent defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for the New York Rangers’ 2025 first-round pick (protected), forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais and prospect pick Melvin Fernström, the teams announced Friday.

Marcus Pettersson spoke to the media for the first time since signing a six-year, $33 million contract extension with the Vancouver Canucks. The 28-year-old defender's new contract will start next season and carries a cap hit of $5.

The Vancouver Canucks traded for Marcus Pettersson in a big deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins. At the time, some criticized the Canucks for moving a first-round pick in this deal. Pettersson was a free agent at the end of the season.
